The Nuno Felting Process
All of my one of a kind art pieces start out as layers of fine merino wool. Why merino, because it’s soft to the touch when worn against the skin. Then the real fun begins. I incorporate other luster plant based fibers such as viscose or bamboo which can add shine and texture. I also use different forms of silk fibers which instill their own unique qualities and textures. I may even make my own fiber paper to incorporate as embellishments.
I like to upcycle many different types of fabrics but especially silk to my pieces; it’s exciting to turn one persons unwanted garments into a new piece of wearable art. Reduce-Reuse. I may employ the use of carders (brushes) to mix different shades of wool to make a new color or I may simply dye my own fibers and fabrics myself. Then with soap, water and agitation the hard work of felting and fulling (shrinking) begins. After some time and much effort, a new light weight artful fabric or item has been created that is so much fun to wear not to mention warm.
I like to leave edges organic looking as possible, it adds artistic flair. People are amazed at the colors, textures and shine. Many times I do not add buttons or snaps to my scarfs as they are are usually reversible and can be worn in different configurations to show off a particular part of the scarf therefore you can use your favorite pin or secure in place with one of my felted magnetic buttons. Note that this process is very different from shrinking a knitted item. There is no sewing or knitting in my process.
